LPG systems: pros and cons

At the same time, market demand of gas vehicles increased seriously.

LPG vehicles serial production increased consequently, as well as the number of LPG systems installed after marked on petrol cars.

Why LPG demand increased so much?

Before analysing LPG advantages, let’s see what this fuel is made of.

Where does LPG come from?

LPG (Liquefied Petroleum Gas) is a natural by-product of natural gas and crude oil refining.

During refining, crude oil is subjected to high temperatures with fractional distillation procedure (about 400°C).

Each step has a different boiling temperature; the last stage is about 100°C, and this is where GAS is extracted and then processed to get by-products such as LPG.

LPG benefits

One of the advantages of LPG is the large number of service stations.

In Italy, many LPG stations were built during the last years, also thanks to its ease of transportation.

Also, as already said, LPG is a natural by-product of natural gas and crude oil refining, meaning that it is available in large quantities in nature.

The advantages of driving on LPG

There are 7 main benefits:

  1. Driving on LPG instead of petrol or diesel, CO2 emissions lower about 10%.
  2. Also, LPG releases 55% less NOx (nitrogen oxide) than petrol and 96% less than diesel, as well as 8% less particulate matter than petrol and 11% less than diesel.
  3. The LPG System, original equipped or installed aftermarket, allows you to save a lot.
  4. How much does 1 litre of LPG cost? One of the biggest advantages is fuel cost, for sure; it costs 60% less than petrol.
  5. In Italy, a road tax reduction is granted in case of purchase of a bi-fuel car or conversion of a petrol car, according to your residence.
  6. LPG systems are more and more safe and efficient, so that vehicle performances basically don’t change after converting it.
  7. In many cities, an LPG car can move freely in traffic restriction areas too.

The disadvantages of driving on LPG

One of the biggest LPG cons is parking.

In Italy, LPG vehicles can not be parked below the first underground level of a garage, sometimes event on it.

The reason of prohibition lies in GAS composition: being LPG heavier than air, in case of leak it can not disperse quickly in the atmosphere.

In recent years, safety standards have been checked in order to change the current situation, thanks to the fact that gas systems are today very safe. Maybe one day LPG vehicles can be parked underground.

After refuelling LPG, your car may seem slightly heavier, obviously just a little more than a petrol refuelling.

We can say that there are more pros than cons in converting a car to LPG, concerning above all parking.
